Open Educational Resources (OER)

Create and publish your own OER

University of Galway provides a suite of OER publishing tools and platforms enabling staff and students to create and promote open, free, and reusable OER learning materials. The Open Press at the University of Galway is an OER publishing platform provided by Pressbooks and initially funded by the Student Project fund. It enables the production and editing of web books and similar content, which can be published under an open licence.

There is a range of e-learning authoring tools for interactive, multimedia content, in use in the university, as well as a site licence for H5P (a CELT project) which is used to produce short interactive content for use within Canvas. H5P content can also be published and shared externally via H5P.org and the H5P OERHub.

You can use the Open Press at the University of Galway platform in the following ways:

  • Produce, or customise, Open Texts and similar materials (e.g. lecture notes, handbooks, manuals, annotated books/memoirs, essay collections, etc).
  • Embed multimedia and other components
  • Apply identifiers to your OER e.g.,  DOI, ISBN
  • Use you OER privately in the Learning Management System (Canvas)
  • Import content and export the resulting publication to a variety of formats, including MOBI, EPUB, and PDF.
  • Publish and share publicly via the Pressbooks global directory
  • Discover new content and/or import free and open content from the Pressbooks global directory

To get started go to Open Press at the University of Galway and Sign In with your campus account, entering your staff/student ID and password

NOTE: The promotion of the use and production of OER is a flagship goal in the Open Value of the University of Galway Strategy 2020-2025.
