Open Educational Resources (OER)

Open Histology

This project will develop an open textbook based on OpenStax Anatomy and Physiology. The textbook will be tailored to the needs of students at NUIG and will provide links to additional open histology resources such as the OpenScience Laboratory virtual microscope viewer developed by The Open University and The Wolfson Foundation.

The OpenStax Anatomy and Physiology textbook was adopted in the current academic year for three 2nd year science modules, AN2101, AN2102 and AN226, by Dr Helen Dodson. This is a large textbook running to two volumes which covers an introduction to Anatomy and Physiology for undergraduates. The anatomy content and more specifically the microscopic anatomy, known as histology, is applicable to these 2nd year undergraduate modules and therefore editing and re-arranging will create an accessible resource specifically tailored to the learning needs of this cohort of students.

I joined the Discipline of Anatomy as a lecturer in December 2011. I obtained my PhD in Cell and Molecular Biology from the University of Edinburgh in 2003. My doctoral research, which was carried out in the Laboratory of Professor Bill Earnshaw focused on cell division and in particular the spindle assembly checkpoint which ensures accurate segregation of chromosomes at mitosis.

"I am delighted to receive this funding to support the creation of an open educational resource specifically tailored for 2nd year science students studying histology."
