Effective & Responsible Use of Generative AI Tools

Effective & Responsible Use of Generative AI Tools

AI may give you the ingredients, but you should always be the chef.

Open book Study Assistance

NotebookLM can act as a tutor partner; ask it to create study notes, challenge you with quizzes, and test your understanding. Make sure you critically evaluate the accuracy of the materials generated as you study.

A magnifying glass Research Assistance

Perplexity gives you the links to its sources so that you can easily do further research. There are also AI tools within academic databases that are invaluable discovery tools, e.g., ScopusAI and AskSkift. They can distill or explain complex concepts in language you can understand, and the conversational output means you can ask for clarification when you still aren’t sure.

Three people brainstorming Brainstorming Assistance

Use AI to generate ideas or to help with the logical organization of your assignment. Declare this use and always remain the primary author of your work.

Black eye glasses Proofreading Assistance

When you have written your assignment, use AI to ensure your writing style suits your audience and purpose, and to check sentence clarity, spelling, and grammar, or to format your citations. Declare this use and always remain the primary author of your work.

Use AI to offer interpretations and to summarize data sets. Always verify the outputs and make sure you can explain and justify the results.

Examples of Unacceptable GenAI Use in an Academic Context

  • Generating work that you present as your own in your assignment
  • Writing a draft of your assignment
  • Writing entire sentences, paragraphs, or sections that you present as your own
  • Paraphrasing text written by others (or output from GenAI)
  • Using generated information without verification
