The library subscribes to Nielsens, an ISBN agent affiliated to the International ISBN Agency, and maintains a range of International Standard Book Numbers (ISBNs). An ISBN ensures that  books are visible to booksellers, libraries and others worldwide. It is a numeric book identifier that is intended to be unique and are  assigned to each separate edition and variation (except reprintings) of a publication. An e-book, a paperback and hardcover edition of the same book will each have a different ISBN. ISBNs are used by publishers, booksellers and libraries for ordering, listing and stock control.

If a commercial/academic publisher is publishing your books then they assign ISBNs to them. Authors at the university publishing books that denote the publisher as University of Galway can apply to the library for an ISBN. The Library will provide you with the ISBN for your book and will register it with Nielsens. Details required include title, physical details, contributors, subject and language. If you are not an author from the University of Galway you can apply to Nielsens for an ISBN.
