Open Research Practices

Online tutorials and training

There are a number of free, self-directed online courses to help you learn more about open research practices.

ENLIGHT Open Science Toolkit: This toolkit has been developed by the 10 partner institutions of ENLIGHT, which includes University of Galway. It provides essential information for researchers and students, with a focus on open access and research data management.

PaPOR trail (Principles and Practices of Open Research): This course was developed by a team including Dr. Elaine ToomeyDr. Catherine Houghton, and Johanna Pope from the University of Galway. The target audience is undergraduate and taught master's students, and after the introductory module, there are further sections on reserach integrity, pre-registration, research data management, reproducible practices, open reporting, and knowledge dissemination. Please see the video below.

Agape Open Science Community: The Agape community is composed of early career researchers, including Dr. Aswathi Surendran from the University of Galway. The community has written an introductory course for early career researchers.

NASA (US National Aeronautics and Space Administration) "Transform to Open Science": In Dec. 2023, NASA released "Open Science 101", a public course to "empower researchers, early career scientists, and underrepresented communities with the knowledge and tools necessary to embrace open science practices" (NASA 2023). On 2025-01-20, the official page was removed; however, there is a back-up copy at The Wayback Machine.

If you want to chat further about any of these topics and tutorials, or if you'd like us to develop specific training sessions in Galway, please email Dr. Jen Smith, Open Research Librarian.
